THE STORY
During the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the 15-meter yacht Winston Churchill, skippered by Richard Winning, was abandoned after taking on water in severe storm conditions. The nine-member crew entered life rafts, but three crew members—John Dean, James Lawler, and Michael Bannister—drowned after being swept from their raft. The incident underscored the dangers of offshore racing in rapidly escalating weather conditions.
