On March 16, 2018, at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, the No. 16 seed UMBC Retrievers defeated the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers 74-54 in the first round of the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Senior guard Jairus Lyles led UMBC with 28 points, making history as the first 16-seed to beat a 1-seed in the men's tournament.
