On February 8, 1983, at approximately 8:30 p.m., three masked and armed men entered the home of Jim Fitzgerald, head groom at Ballymany Stud in County Kildare, Ireland. They abducted the champion racehorse Shergar, demanding a £2 million ransom. Despite negotiations, Shergar was never returned, and the case remains unsolved.
