On July 6, 1975, at Belmont Park, undefeated filly Ruffian faced Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure in a highly anticipated match race. Mid-race, Ruffian suffered a catastrophic injury, fracturing both sesamoid bones in her right front ankle. Despite immediate veterinary efforts, she was euthanized, marking a tragic day in horse racing history.
