THE STORY
On July 24, 1983, George Brett of the Kansas City Royals hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium, putting the Royals ahead 5–4. Yankees manager Billy Martin protested, claiming Brett's bat had excessive pine tar beyond the legal 18-inch limit. Umpire Tim McClelland ruled the homer invalid and called Brett out, ending the game with a Yankees 4–3 lead. The Royals protested, and the game resumed on August 18, with the Royals winning 5–4.
