On April 4, 1983, at The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the NC State Wolfpack defeated the Houston Cougars 54–52 in the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship game. The game concluded with a buzzer-beating dunk by Lorenzo Charles, off a 30-foot shot from Dereck Whittenburg. Houston's Akeem Olajuwon was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
