At the 2017 World Championships in London, Mutaz Essa Barshim, the Qatari high jumper, cleared 2.35 meters to secure the gold medal. Afterward, he attempted 2.40 meters to improve his season's best but failed on all three attempts. A week later, at the Birmingham Diamond League, Barshim successfully cleared 2.40 meters, setting a new meeting record.
