THE STORY

In May 2006, during the 2005–06 Volvo Ocean Race, the Spanish yacht Movistar suffered a critical structural failure when the aft end of its keel pivot bearing detached from the hull. The crew abandoned the vessel and transferred to the nearby ABN AMRO TWO, which escorted them to safety. Movistar was subsequently believed to have sunk due to the damage sustained. (sailing.org)
