On June 16, 1983, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, boxer Luis Resto faced Billy Collins Jr. in a ten-round bout. Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis, had removed padding from Resto's gloves and soaked his hand wraps in plaster of Paris, resulting in severe injuries to Collins. The New York State Boxing Commission declared the fight a no contest, and both Resto and Lewis faced legal consequences, including convictions for assault and conspiracy. Collins' career was ended by the injuries sustained, and he died in a car accident less than a year later.
