THE STORY

On October 9, 1996, during Game 1 of the American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium, 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reached over the right-field fence to catch Derek Jeter's fly ball, deflecting it into the stands. Umpire Rich Garcia ruled it a home run, tying the game at 4–4. The Yankees won in extra innings and eventually the series in five games.
