THE STORY
In November 1997, the Montreal Expos traded pitcher Pedro Martínez to the Boston Red Sox for pitchers Carl Pavano and a player to be named later. Martínez had a standout 1997 season, winning the National League Cy Young Award with a 17–8 record, 1.90 ERA, and 305 strikeouts. He was the first right-handed pitcher since 1912 to reach 300 strikeouts with an ERA under 2.00. The Expos received Tony Armas Jr. on December 18, 1997, to complete the trade.
