On November 19, 1993, the Los Angeles Dodgers traded pitcher Pedro Martínez to the Montreal Expos in exchange for second baseman Delino DeShields. Martínez, 22, had a promising 1993 season with a 10-5 record and a 2.61 ERA. DeShields, 24, was a speedy leadoff hitter for the Expos, batting.295 with 43 stolen bases in 1993. The trade was intended to bolster the Dodgers' offense but is often cited as a significant misstep in team history.
