On December 2, 1995, at the Montreal Forum, the Canadiens suffered an 11–1 defeat to the Detroit Red Wings. Goalie Patrick Roy allowed nine goals on 26 shots before being replaced in the second period. After the game, Roy informed team president Ronald Corey that he had played his last game for Montreal.
