THE STORY

On May 20, 2006, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro suffered a catastrophic injury during the Preakness Stakes. Shortly after the start, he fractured his right hind leg, leading to his withdrawal from the race and ending his Triple Crown bid. Despite extensive medical efforts, Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007.
