In April 2019, Kenyan middle-distance runner Asbel Kiprop received a four-year ban after testing positive for erythropoietin (EPO) in an out-of-competition test conducted in November 2017. Kiprop, the 2008 Olympic 1500m champion and three-time world champion, maintained his innocence, alleging sample tampering and extortion by doping control officers. The Athletics Integrity Unit dismissed these claims, affirming the ban and disqualifying results from November 2017 to February 2018.
